UNESCAP organized a Workshop on Strengthening Transport Connectivity for among Cambodia, Lao People Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Viet Nam and Thailand in Yangon on 9-10 October 2018. The Workshop was hosted by Ministry of Transport and Communications of Myanmar.

Opening the workshop, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communication lauded the initiative of ESCAP and welcomed the participants to Yangon. He stated that the Myanmar is now improving its transport infrastructure in line with the National Transport Master Plan covering all modes of transport. He also added that the workshop would be of immense use to Myanmar because of its limited experience in cross border and transit transport.

The representative from the Transport Division of UNESCAP Mr. Sandeep Raj Jain stated that enhancing transport connectivity is key to harness the benefits of geographical proximity among the CLMV-T countries. He reiterated support to the initiatives on strengthening transport connectivity among the countries.

The workshop was attended by around 50 participants from the Ministries of Transport, Maritime Administrations and Customs authorities of the invited countries. The representatives also included experts from the Korea Maritime Institute, Maritime Institute of Malaysia, Philippines Inter-Island Association and freight forwarders associations from Myanmar, Thailand and Lao PDR also attended.

Common challenges to enhance transport connectivity among CLMV-T countries including through coastal shipping were discussed. The participants agreed that the seamless transport connectivity is challenged due to existence of non-physical barriers and expressed the need for practical approaches to deal with such challenges including though use of trailer swap. Importance of coastal shipping was recognized as an environmental-friendly transport mode to promote sustainable transport of cargo and passenger to support realization of Sustainable Development Goals.
