The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission inspects Taunggyi Jail, Nyaung Shwe Prison, Taung Lay Lone Labour Camp, Aungpan Police Lock-up and Kalaw Police Lock-up

An inspection team led by members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission, U Tin Aung and U Than Win, conducted the inspection of Taunggyi Jail on 18 June, 2025 and inspected Nyaung Shwe Prison, Taung Lay Lone Labour Camp and inspected Aungpan Police Lock-up and Kalaw Police Lock-up on 19 June 2025, in Kalaw Township, Shan State, in accordance with Sections 43 and 44 of the Commission Law.
The inspection team checked Taunggyi Jail, Nyaung Shwe Prison and Taung Lay Lone Labour Camp to see whether the prisoners were accessing their fundamental rights, including an appropriate food supply, access to healthcare, and provision of sufficient purified water. Furthermore, the team inquired whether the prisoners had received items issued by the prison and items sent by their families, and whether they were permitted family visits. Additionally, the team evaluated the conditions of physical activities, right to freedom of religion, workplace safety measures, access to education and vocational training, and whether there were instances of human rights violations and torture by prison officials and fellow prisoners. The inspection team also privately interviewed the prisoners who wanted to meet with the team freely and privately.
Then the inspection team looked over various facilities within the prison including the dormitories, the prison clinic, the library, family visit area, kitchen, food warehouse, water purifiers, water sanitation system. And then the team visited and met with prisoners/detainees receiving medical treatment at Sao San Tun General Hospital, inspected the medical treatment situation, and gave them words of encouragement. Books and publications on knowledge, literature, health, and religion were also donated for inmates to read and study at various prisons, detention centers, agricultural and vocational training camps.
At Aungpan Police Lock-up and Kalaw Police Lock-up, the MNHRC team inspected the conditions of detainees during the remand period, whether any torture occurred during the investigation and whether there were opportunities to meet with family members, as well as the provision of food and drinking water, the handling of sewage, the overall cleanliness of the facilities and whether the conditions of access to legal assistance.
MNHRC will send recommendations to the relevant departments for necessary action based on the findings during inspection.
