Deputy Prime Minister Union Minister for Defence General Mya Tun Oo, in his capacity as the Chairman of the Central Committee on Intellectual Property Rights, attended the meeting 1/2023 of the central committee which was held in Nay Pyi Taw on 21 June, and said as follows:

· Myanmar is a member country of World Trade Organization (WTO) and World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and it is needed to establish an intellectual property system that is in line with the international standards.

· For that requirement, 4 intellectual property laws were enacted in 2019. Of them, the Trademark Law came into force on 1 April 2023, and the registration of trademarks was officially accepted from 26 April this year.

· Out of four intellectual property laws, it is needed to continue the implementation of the remaining Industrial Designs Law, the Invention Copyright Law, and the Literary and Artistic Copyright Law to be able to come into force.

· Being a member of the WTO and the WIPO, Myanmar needs to comply with the Intellectual Property (IP) Treaty related to trade as well as participate in the IP agreement among ASEAN countries.

· Other member states have already implemented the intellectual property system contributing to investments, facilitation of trade flows, and economic development, earlier than Myanmar. Therefore, the relevant officials are urged to strive to implement the IP system to keep abreast of other nations.

Vice-Chair of the Central Committee Union Minister U Aung Naing Oo and officials reported on the measures to be taken to be able to keep abreast of other nations regarding IP. Then, the decision (draft) of the 1/2023 meeting was approved following the Central Committee Chair gave concluding remarks.

Also present at the meeting were Vice-Chair of the Central Committee Union Minister for Commerce U Aung Naing Oo, committee members, deputy ministers, permanent secretaries, directors-general, officials and invitees.
