The Myanmar National Human Rights Commission inspects Tawgyitan Labour Camp

On 10 January 2025, the inspection team, led by U Tin Aung and U Than Win, Members of the Myanmar National Human Rights Commission (MNHRC) conducted an inspection of Tawgyitan Labour Camp in Twante Township, Yangon Region, in accordance with Sections 43 and 44 of the Commission Law.
Inspection team conducted a visit to Tawgyitan Labour Camp to assess whether prisoners were afforded their fundamental rights, including an appropriate food supply, access to healthcare, and provision of sufficient purified water. The team inquired whether the prisoners had received items issued by the prison and items sent by their families, and whether they were permitted, family visits. Additionally the team evaluated the conditions of physical activities, workplace environments, safety measures, and investigated any instances of workplace discrimination, and torture. Prisoners who wished to report concerns were also interviewed privately by the inspection team.
Furthermore, the inspection team examined the dormitories, clinic, library, kitchen, food storage, clean water tank and water sanitation system of the labour camp. The MNHRC also donated general knowledge books for the benefit of the prisoners.
MNHRC inspection team will send its findings and recommendations to the relevant department in accordance with the MNHRC law for necessary actions.
