Myanmar National Human Rights Commission/ Yangon / September 21, 2025
1. The United Nations was established to safeguard and promote global peace and security free from the perils of World Wars and conflicts that had brought immense suffering to humankind. In order to ensure that efforts for peace would be more effective and successful, 21 September 1981 was designated as the International Day of Peace.
2. Peace is a fundamental necessity for all of humanity to live in safety and security. As stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, peace is the foundation for everyone. Likewise, the United Nations Declaration on the Right to Peace (2016) affirms that peace is indispensable for the full enjoyment of all human rights. Furthermore, all nations are giving special attention and efforts to "The promotion of peace and justice" as outlined in the UN Sustainable Development Goal 16.
3. It is heartening to learn that Myanmar is preparing to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the signing of the Nationwide Ceasefire Agreement (NCA), which is a historic milestone in the efforts to achieve a lasting and sustainable peace based on justice.
4. The theme for the International Day of Peace 2025 is "Act Now for a Peaceful World." As all citizens long for peace, every individual is also urged to contribute responsibly and conscientiously in their respective capacities, so that the right to peace may be fully enjoyed by all humanity. With this call to collective action from today onwards, we honor the International Day of Peace.
